US Spanish-language television’s hit series “El Señor de Los Cielos” returned to Telemundo last month with an eighth season, introducing viewers to series newcomer Ruben Cortada. One of Spain’s most sought-after actors, the Cuban actor joins “El Señor de Los Cielos” as Fernando Aguirre, a ruthless man who hides behind his charm to infiltrate and bring down the notorious Aurelio Casillas (Rafael Amaya).
These are 10 things you didn’t know about Ruben:
1. The actor was born in Cuba and has lived in Spain for more than 15 years.
2. He is a foodie and enjoys trying different cuisines from the places he visits.
3. An avid athlete, he practices many sports including tennis, scuba diving, horseback riding and sailing. Obtaining the rank of Navigation Skipper was one of his biggest achievements and goals.
4. Before becoming an actor, he studied engineering in the hopes of pursuing his father’s career, but he eventually abandoned that to pursue modeling.
5. During his modeling years, he met singer and photographer Bryan Adams, who envisioned a bright future for him as an actor.
6. He has worked with well- known designers including Jean Paul Gaultier, Armani, and Dolce Gabbana.
7. A “Cuban in Paris” is how the actor jokingly recalls one of his most memorable experiences as a model when he ‘almost lost’ his feet during a photoshoot due to hypothermia from not knowing how to appropriately dress for the weather.
8. Ruben’s interest in exploring the world of Performing Arts encouraged him to study film directing at the Metropolis School of Film & Acting, where he received the prestigious “Gustavito” award for a short film.
9. His career jump-started with his participation in the series “El Príncipe” as Faruq. His popularity grew to the point that, one time, fans spotted him at a restaurant in the south of Spain, and he had to leave and jump in a moving van to get away because the venue could not guarantee his safety.
10. After a three-year hiatus, Ruben returned to acting with his participation in “El Cuarto Pasajero,” starring the iconic actress Blanca Suarez (Cable Girls) and, most recently, “El Senor de los Cielos”.
If you want to see more of him on “El Señor de Los Cielos,” tune in Monday through Friday at 9pm/8c on Telemundo.
